Brain concussion

DEFINITIONS

Concussion is a change caused by injury to the mental function or level of consciousness that involved loss of consciousness, can occur without obvious damage to the brain structure, and lasted less than 6 hours.

People who have a concussion temporarily stunned or slightly confused. Some people may not realize that they already have a concussion. Consciousness may be lost for a short time, rarely more than 15 minutes. Memories for events just before or just after the injury may have been lost.

Then, the patient may experience headache, spinning sensation, lightheadedness, fatigue, poor memory, inability to concentrate, irritability, depression, and anxiety. Symptoms of post-concussion syndrome is common brain for a week after a concussion and is generally recovered in the second week. But, sometimes, the symptoms continue for months or, rarely, for years. People who already have a concussion also seems to be more susceptible to other injuries, especially if the new injury occurred before the symptoms of previous concussions really gone.

Diagnosis

To diagnose a concussion, doctors need to convince the brain structure was not damaged. Done using computed tomography (CT scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or both. If there is no structural brain damage, only the symptoms need dioabti. For concussion, acetaminophen was given for pain. Antiinflamsi aspirin and non-steroidal drugs (NSAIDs) should not be used for disturbing the blood clotting and can cause bleeding from damaged blood vessels. Rest is best for pengoabatn concussion.

TREATMENT

Treatment for post-concussion syndrome based on the severity of symptoms. Rest and attached very important observation. People who experience emotional difficulties may need psychotherapy. Repeated concussions can increase the risk of future patients into dementia, Parkinson's disease, and depression. People should not go back to the body contact sports after a concussion until all the ill effects are gone and the medical evaluation is completed.
